History

On August 20, 1945, a subsidiary of the now defunct local newspaper, the Dallas Times Herald, along with director Tom C. Gooch, applied for a local television station. The establishment was preceded by construction, obtaining a license and permission to operate a television station. The channel was named KDFW, as a continuation of the same named radio.

Test broadcasting began on November 21, 1949. The first program that was broadcast was a football match of the local university team.

As of 1950, KDFW was the third program on Dallas television and the fourth program on Texas television.

From the beginning, they broadcast their programs 4 hours a day from 7 AM to 11 AM. Then, they added time from 5 PM to 8 PM.

Over time, the range of programs has expanded:

  • OKay! Mr. Mann (the main presenter was an artist who drew a visual interpretation of the songs that played before)
  • Confessions (the presenter recorded interviews with criminals in the local Dallas prison and discovered why they committed their crimes).

The first television programs were broadcast from a room at the Adolphus Hotel, which is located in the center of the city.

The TV tower that broadcast the channel was the tallest in the world at the time of its construction in 1955.

On November 22, 1963, the KDFW channel served as the base for coverage of the events of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. News director Eddie Barker became the first news employee to report the death of the 35th president.

Dallas’ main television station, KDFW, began broadcasting in 1960 as a CBS affiliate after losing its license to broadcast Dallas Cowboys games. At the time, CBS had the right to broadcast sports programming and directly broadcast the National Football League.

The channel broadcasted most of the regional and national games of the Dallas Cowboys, including the Super Bowls.

The work continued until 1993 when the final contract was signed with the National Cowboy Federation.

Joining the KDFW network of Texas television channels dates back to 1995. From the first day of inclusion, the TV channel broadcasted only in prime time (the time when the TV is watched by most people). This feature was aimed at showing it to as many people as possible. During its heyday, KDFW also aried Fox’s Saturday night programming and specially prepared Fox News reports.

KDFW’s digital transition began on September 10, 1998. For some time, analog television was broadcast in parallel to notify viewers of the change.
